COMING THIS JULY
performed by Kormick Jones of the BoxClub
I want to provide a safe, accepting space, for people to create momentary cultural engagement without the dependency on substance, space, and pre-existing traditions.
I will live as my hobo Clown Kormick Jones for one week leading up to The Potentialist Workshop summer event in July and provide 2 workshops during the week on immersive theater and character work.
I hope to draw attention to the emphasis our modern culture places on cultural appropriation and technological advancement over social engagement/ interactions. Festivals and large events are created for people to gather and feel a sense of place... of having a home. And with growing technological advancements asking us to spend more time communicating through and with a screen or computer we lose the human elements that give us a sense of belonging; of responsibility.
To feel the lack of engagement many people choose drugs and ideologies piecemeal from cultures not of their own. Leaving their identity varied, “multicultural”; fractured. When drugs are no longer in plenty, or we return home from our large event we find what was acceptable at the event is not so accepted in our everyday. Our lack still exists... we are homeless.
The hobo Clown both raises the question of cultural appropriation leading to cultural homelessness, while providing a space where people can engage and create the culture the design through simple games and fun.
The large gallery space will be covered and piled with cardboard boxes of all shapes and sizes. Box tape, sharpies, and one or two box cutters will be on hand so participants of Kormick immersive experience and alter the momentary world to suit their needs. Being lead by Kormick to design what is necessary to participate in improvised moments of engagement within the cardboard world. From cardboard cityscaping, cardboard wars, and cardboard art. (See video)
A live stream will be setup and this will begin a possible tour of other art galleries. As Kormick of course is a art Hobo... traveling not the railways or streets, but galleries, art exhibits, and stages country wide.
